Iredell Leads the Way… Again

This past Wednesday (Jan 16th), Iredell County commissioners voted unanimously to approve their Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) as presented, but with one important amendment:

They changed the line item regarding widening I-77 by removing “HOT lanes” and inserting “general purpose lanes.”

This decision comes on the heels of their December 4th meeting when they amended their 2008 Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP) to “account for the HOT lanes project.”

What happened?

While we’d like to think our information session two days earlier had something to do with it, the fact is Iredell County has asked the tough questions and dared to lead before.  When faced with a new set of facts, they’re not afraid to change their minds.  Remember a year ago when the topic was the Red Line?

The politics of this really gets intriguing because this past year most of Iredell County was absorbed into the Mecklenburg-Union Metropolitan Planning Organization (MUMPO).  (MUMPO are the folks who set the priorities for transportation projects in the region.) Before that happened, the previous version of MUMPO voted unanimously to endorse the P3 HOT lane project.

Now there’s a dissenting voice.

Stay tuned.
